It has been awhile since I've posted any items for you to add to your Superhero Book.   What's a Superhero Book?  It is the place you put all the things you can't find by regular methods and have had to call W L May for info from the manufacturer's.  Or it is for anything that you use regularly and don't want to look it up by normal means.  Click on the link above for all past articles on this subject.

New item:  GE has a new dryer maintenance kit - WE49X21874.  This kit has the WE14M124 top bearing, 2 of the WE1M504 white glides, 2 of the WE1M1067 green glides, a WE09X20441 lower felt seal and the WE12M29 drum belt - big savings over buying these parts individually.

With that, is the maintenance kit for the older GE dryers - WE49X20697 - this has the WE3M26 (now in the process of changing to WE03X20570), 2 each of the WE1M504 and WE1M1067 glides, a WE9M30 lower felt and a WE12M29 belt.

Also, Whirlpool/Maytag is in the process of changing manufacturers of their refrigerator water filters and the old part numbers will be changing also.  I know, if you've had some of these memorized it will be a pain on new part numbers, but changing part numbers are a way of life.

Whirlpool Training

Last week, W.L. May Company was happy to host a training session in the conference room of our "new" Vancouver warehouse. Whirlpool's trainer Randy Kruger brought his expertise to W.L. May Company, showing the mechanics of high efficiency top load washers and the radically new hybrid heat dryers.

Due to some scheduling difficulties this was announced with very short notice. For that we apologize. Despite the late announcement the turnout was impressive and shows us the demand for training opportunities. We thank  you all for attending and look forwarding to hosting more of this type of event in the future.

Mark Guzman, the manager of our Sacramento branch, was also on hand and snapped some pictures of the event that we are happy to share. Once again, thanks to all of you who made time in your busy schedules to attend and increase your product knowledge, we hope you found the experience helpful.

Wednesday Weekly Stock: Clothes Dryers

Every week at W.L. May we have several items we feature as good parts to consider adding to your stock. These parts also have special pricing available. For pricing details, ask your account representative for more information. This week we look into the world of clothes dryers.

The first part from this week's featured parts isn't really a part at all. Instead it used to attach parts. Our first item is a high temperature adhesive from Maytag that is used to glue felt seals found on many dryers into place. We stock it under the manufacturers part number of Y055980.

Another item that isn't really a part in the machine is this outlet duct. Here are a few features of the 4 inch ProVent outlet duct that we stock. Recently the louvers on the outer wall faceplate have been re-engineered to prevent stocking. The faceplate also has a groove on the back to allow for cleaner caulking than older designs had. That same faceplate comes in white, but can also be painted to match existing decor. Ask for part #LH4WXZ.

When the machine stops working, that's when the repairman gets called. A simple cause for a not working dryer could be a door switch. A switch stuck on open will not complete the circuit. Luckily that switch is usually readily available. Both 2 and 3 terminal switchs are frequently replaced by this one, part W10169313.

Another type of part we get regular calls for are dryer lint filters. They are relatively easy to damage and sometimes (especially in households with kids) they just disappear. For many years the Whirlpool style lint filter was accessed from the top of the machine where it inserted into a channel behind the drum. On newer models, the lint filter is usually found at the front of the drum just inside the door. On Whirlpools and their related brands (think Maytag), usually that filter is part 33001003.

The next part we are looking at today has a bit of history to it. The part itself is the idler pulley found on  Speed Queen dryers. Speed Queen was a part of Amana at one time, Well, Amana became part of Maytag. Maytag decided to use some of those designs on Magic Chef products and Maytag became a part of Whirlpool. So that means that this idler pulley can be found on Speed Queen, Amana, Magic Chef, Maytag and Whirlpool dryers. Naturally we always keep on hand this part, number Y54414.

Laundry and Truancy: More In Common Than You Might Think

Whirlpool announced a new ad campaign this week that features images of families doing small caring acts for each other, usually involving appliances. The message that they are trying to spread is that the little things we do every day to make a house a home are acts of caring that ultimately lead to making the world a better place.

It's a positive message that we certainly can't dispute here at W.L.May. It is the small acts of caring that we provide to our clients that we hope will lead them to success in business. It is our sincere hope that the caring gets paid forward making our clients customers lives a little better too.

One of the spots in the campaign throws a few statistics at the viewer. One that particularly caught me attention was a claim that "Not having clean clothes is a leading cause of truancy rates." When I see a claim like that in an ad, even if it comes from trusted source, I like to investigate further.

Whirlpool pointed out an issue that educators have been aware of for a while. It turns out that one of the number one listed causes of truancy is indeed a lack of clean clothes. Kids would rather skip school than be embarrassed by showing up to class in dirty dungarees.

In Los Angeles, school children at the 75th Street Elementary School have some relief. a few years ago, the school's principal organized community members and collected donations to purchase a washer and dryer to be used on campus to help with student laundry needs.

It is a step. Issues such as truancy, especially in low income neighborhoods such as the 75th Street Elementary School's, are a big challenge and a lot comes into play. Still, wearing clean clothes can only help to increase the kids self esteem and confidence which should lead to less truancy and more learning. That's just good for the community.

Kelly's Korner - Super Hero Book Revisited

Hey, All,

As I mentioned before, I have been training some new employees and I have stressed to them the importance of them starting their own Superhero Book.  They have been amazed as to the answers I can pull out of it when they have been beating their heads looking all over for something that can't be found by normal methods.

So I thought I'd go back and go from the beginning.  Now some of you who are more tech savvy could put all this on a program, but I am old school and I like my paper.

Grab a 3-ring binder (decorate any which way you want) and get some dividers and label them according to the manufacturers you deal with:  Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Bosch, LG, etc.  I would put a blank sheet or two of paper for those little things that you really don't need a print out of and a divider for miscellaneous stuff.

Now, anytime you have something that comes along that you can't find by conventional means, STICK IT IN YOUR BOOK!!!!  Research on it was bad enough the first time, right?, so you definately do not want to do it a second time, and you will be kicking yourself from here to breakfast for not having it.  You can put in service bulletins, installation instructions, pictures printed off the internet (make notes on these so you can remember the why and whatfor), ANYTHING that cannot be found by conventional means.  If you have to call a manufacturer, your distributor, or if a tech comes across something that you may need in the future, put it in there.  Way better to have too much information that not enough, right?

Kelly's Korner - KitchenAid Mixers

Hey, All,

The other day my sister posted a picture of her new orange KitchenAid mixer that her husband and daughter bought her for her birthday.  She is loving it.  The one I have my dad bought my mom back in the late 60's early 70's and it is olive green.  Still works like a champ.  Mom used to do cakes semi-professionally and our friends would come from miles around when they found out she was making a cake as they LOVED her frosting - in fact, one girlfriend of mine just got a bowl of icing for her birthday - no cake - as the frosting was her favorite.

Why am I talking about a small appliance today instead of a major appliance?  KitchenAid is a Whirlpool brand, and while W L May does not carry small appliance parts, we do carry parts for the KitchenAid mixers.  In fact, the name KitchenAid came from one of the wives of the executives of Whirlpool when she declared,  “I don’t care what you call it, but I know it’s the best kitchen aid I’ve ever had!”

The first KitchenAid stand mixer came out in 1919 and were sold door-to-door by women.  Because of the high cost most stores would not sell them.  They went through many design changes but since the 1930's the look hasn't changed much.  They come in a wide variety of colours to please everyone. But the best thing about this mixer that it is a workhorse.  I don't think mine has ever had any parts replaced in the 35+ years we've had it.

This mixer is so versatile - not only can you whip up your favorite cake or cookies but you can mix and knead bread dough.  And you can buy attachments for it for juicing, grinding meat, stuffing sausages, making pasta, food processing and many more.  While the attachments are a bit pricey, if you use them alot, it is a lot cheaper in the long run than buying  separate appliances and saves a lot of space on your counter and well worth it.

KitchenAid mixers are the single, most registered item ever and a definate must-have in your kitchen if you do a lot of cooking.  I wouldn't trade mine for the world.  Not only for the sentimental valve because of all the memories of Mom making cakes and helping her with that, but because if I only had one small appliance, this is it.

So if you would like one for Christmas, get it on your list now - post pictures and ads all over the house so your loved ones get the hint!

3 Dryer Makers and 6 Service Kits

A clothes dryer is probably the simplest of the major appliances. There are a limited number of moving parts, they are easy for the lay person to understand, and for the most part the same designs have stayed in place for years. Since a clothes dryer is so simple it can also be one of the easier things to service. As a pro repair person, its probably a job you love. The easy diagnostics and and easy servicing make it appealing, it also makes it the kind of project a do-it-yourselfer might try to tackle.

If you are looking to do one of these repairs, or if you are helping out a DIY person with parts, it makes sense to change out all the parts that are also likely to be wearing out when you do the repair. Luckily, most manufacturers offer kits that include all the parts that have a tendency to wear out. Usually, the kits cost less than buying the individual parts.

Here are maintenance kits for the three largest American appliance makers.

Whirlpool

• 4392065-Used on most 27" dryers. Contains  multi-rib belt (part 341241), drum support roller kit (part 349241T), idler pulley (part 691366), and installation instructions.
• 4392067-Used on some 27" dryers (frequently commercial machines). Contains multi-rib belt (part 661570), 4 support rollers (part 3396802), idler assembly (part 3388672), and installation instructions. 
• 4392068-Used on 24" dryers. Contains multi-rib belt (part 3394652) drum support roller kit (part 349241), idler pulley (part 691366) and installation instructions.

Electrolux

• 5304457724-"New Style" for machine from 2002-Present. Contains drive belt (part 134503600), rear bearing kit (part 5303281153), idler pulley/bracket assembly (part 131863000), upper front felt seal (part 5303937182), lower front felt seal (part 5303937183)
• 5304461262-"Old Style" for machine prior to 2002.  Contains 88" drum belt (part 134503600), bearing kit (part 5303281153), idler pulley (part 131863007), upper front felt seal (part 5303937139), and lower front felt seal (part 5303283286), needed adhesive and grease.

General Electric

• WE49X20697-Contains belt (part WE12M29), top bearing (part WE3M26), two white glides (part WE1M504), two green glides (part WE1M1067), and lower felt seal (part WE9M30)

The next time you are servicing a dryer, remember these kits. They can frequently save time by preventing further problems before they occur and by simplifying the parts ordering process. They can also save you money over the cost of buying the parts individually. Consider adding at least one of each kit to your inventory and remember to offer the kit to people doing their own service. Odds are that when they open the machine they will realize other areas that need maintenance as well and you will be the hero with foresight. Have a great day and happy repairing!

Kelly's Korner - Whirlpool Water Level Switch Change

Last week I talked about some of the reasons why part numbers change.  This week I am going to talk about just one instance.

Several years ago (2011 actually) Whirlpool had to change the water level switch (pressure switch) in some washers to meet DOE (Department of Energy) requirements.  I won't go into all the wording in the Service Memo, but suffice it to say that they had to make changes.  Whirlpool provided us with a list of model numbers affected so we could get you the correct new switch.

If the water level switch on the Whirlpool/Maytag/Kenmore washer comes up as a W10156252 it will not sub to another part number.  You need to call us to get the correct one because it all depends on what that particular model number is.  There are two different replacements for this so please do not assume you know which of the two are needed.  Please call us here at W L May and we will get you the correct one.

We strive to get you the most up to date information from the manufacturers and the correct parts all the time.  Not to say that we aren't human at times and make mistakes, but our success rate is second to none.  Please use our over 200 years of experience! (yeah, we've only been in business for 91 but most of our parts experts are into double digits in years here!)

Kelly's Korner - Two more items for your Superhero Book

Hope all you moms out there had a great Mother's Day!  I sure did!


My sister, Barbara, and her kids, Samantha and James - it's not only Mother's Day for her but her birthday!  Super mom and sister!



Not much happening on the appliance front at the moment so I thought I would go through my Super Hero Book and share a couple more things.

First one, Electrolux/Frigidaire has an icemaker in some of their refrigerators that are decidedly different than any others I've every seen.  I've had several calls looking for complete replacements on them and there is no such beast.  BUT, they have come out with a repair kit - 5303918495 - that replaces the main control board, bail arm and motor, ice mold and a bunch of other little parts that seem to be the main culprits in the breakdown of this icemaker.

Sometimes, when looking for the  control "jazz" board on some Whirlpool/Maytag/Amana refrigerators, the research will give you a part number of 12002756.  This is not only the board but a bunch of insulation and a new evaporator fan motor and blade.  Now if all you need is the board, the current number for that is 12784415, although there is even a newer version of this board - W10503278.

I hope you are keeping up on your Superhero Book - mine has been a lifesaver more times than I can count and every one of my customer has benefitted from it.  Be a Superhero to your customers, too!

6 Top Selling Whirlpool Dryer Parts

One of our more common questions we get asked at W.L. May Company is "what items are popular sellers?" When clients ask that question it is because they would like to stock those items to be ready for any eventuality. It can be difficult to recommend a standard stock list that would be the same for every client. Many factors can change the needed stock for a given company. Such things as the climate, gas and electrical infrastructure in the community, energy rates, and income levels and local dealers all can have a bearing on what is needed to fill a well stocked service vehicle or parts department. Because of all the different things that can change stocking needs, I can't exactly offer you a complete list that would work for every company. Some parts, however are universally common and generally our best sellers. Today we crack open the books and share with you six of our top Whirlpool dryer parts. In the future we will revisit this subject for some other top sellers in other categories. These parts are not "must stock" items (after all it IS a free country, you can stock what you want), but they are "strongly encouraged" items that should help increase your first call completes, add-on sales, and ultimately make you more efficient and profitable as a service or parts company.

• 3392519-Thermal Fuse-A very commonly used thermal fuse, many techs call this the "surfboard thermal fuse" because that is what it looks like. Due to their function, thermal fuses are a common replacement part. This one has been in use for years and remains consistently popular.

• 279834-Valve Coils-This is sort of a funny item. In areas where gas appliances are common this part is widely requested, in areas where electric dryers are the norm these are far more rarely needed. Many different manufacturers have used valves that require these coils in their dryers, making them near universal. Whirlpool offers a good version at price point that makes it attractive to many servicers.

• 279838-Dryer Element-Whirlpool has used a few different dryer elements over the years that were nearly universal across the product line when they were produced. This is the style we are seeing the most of these days. Again, the popularity of this item will depend on the prevalence of electric vs. gas dyers in your area.

• 341241-Belt-This is THE belt for Whirlpool dryers. A wide number of machine styles have used this belt. Many machines that used wider belts when they were designed also substitute to this belt. There are a few exceptions, but this is awfully close to a universal part for Whirlpool dryers.

• 12001541-Support Roller-This is the support roller used on Maytag dryers (Whirlpool owns Maytag, yet there machines often use different rollers). It falls under the "nearly universal" column. Its popularity may not be a true indicator of the number of machines that failed since it is a best practice to replace both rollers if one fails (rollers used on Whirlpool models are generally sold in a 2 pack).

• 279769-Dryer Thermostat Kit-This is such a popular part among servicers that some will bristle a bit when they find it is not the thermostat kit used on the machine they are servicing. A lot of Whirlpool dryers use this thermostat kit that mounts on the element.. What a lot of servicers like is that it sort of a "2-fer" item. The part is actually a kit that features BOTH a 360 degree thermal cut-out as well as a 250 degree high limit thermostat.

Kelly's Korner - Best Laundry Accessory EVER!

Hey, All,

Did you know that the rings of Saturn are made up of lost socks?  Sure seems like that is where they get transported to when you SWEAR that you put them in the wash.  Well, I have a solution for this!

Whirlpool has a zippered mesh bag that is PERFECT for all those small items that disappear.  The part number is W10180464RP and retails for $9.95 at W L May.  Baby items, gloves, mittens, ladies unmentionables, hoisery of all kinds - these items can slip between the tub and basket of your washer and get pumped out with the drain water. This bag is 15.5" x 16.5" and will hold a variety of those small items securely through the washer and the dryer.

Going to a baby shower?  Include this bag with your gift - the mom-to-be will love it!  Got kids (especially girls) in college or living on their own?  Stick it in their Christmas stocking or include it in a care package.  And even if they are still at home, each person in the family can use these for socks and undies - sure beats having to sort them all out as to who's is who's!  Just mark each bag with each person's name and get rid of the odd sock bag!

Technicians - this is also a good item to have on your truck for add-on sales - especially when you've just handed over a bill for unclogging or replacing a pump because of a bib or bra underwire going through it.

This is one item that you HAVE to have - buy a bunch - you will be surprised at the time and aggravation it will save you!

Kelly's Korner - Michael Moore

Hey, All,

I just want to share with all of you about the son of one of our customers and how this young man has taken his childhood experience of growing up in the appliance repair business into education, training and beyond.

Michael Moore is the son of Kelly Moore of Salem Appliance Repair and Antiques in Salem, Oregon.  He has grown up helping his dad clean and repair appliances since he was a child.  He helped his father start Salem Appliance Repair and runs the business on summer and winter breaks while his dad goes on a well deserved vacation. 

Michael is now a senior mechanical engineering student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX and will be graduating in May.  His list of accomplishments is very high:

Member, chapter public relations officer then regional VP for the international honors society Phi Theta Kappa
Officer and webmaster of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
Founding president of the Tech Gun Club
Team member of HVAC group design project and the senior mechanical engineering design project

Michael is actively looking for employment that will utilize his education, appliance knowledge and organizational skills.  He has applied to several companies, one of which is Whirlpool's WERLD Program. (Whirlpool Engineering Rotational Leadership Development Program).  Check out this program Whirlpool offers - this is where the next generation of appliances is coming from.  Having come from an appliance repair background, Michael is aware of what works and doesn't on appliances, and what it's like to actually repair them and not just design them.

It is always a pleasant - and sometimes interesting - time when Michael is home working at the shop.  He comes up with questions that I have never heard in my 13 years of working here.  He definately keeps me and his father (yeah, we're both Kelly's lol!) on our toes!
