Friday Featured Client: Express Appliance of Twin Falls, Idaho

One of the best things a parts distributor can see is when clients exhibit success by growing their company. That tells us that they are providing a good and in demand service to their community. It also tells us that we have done our part in keeping the parts supply flowing quickly, because we know that a delay in getting parts is one of the most frequent causes of poor online reviews.

Recently, a customer of ours showed some growth by opening a new store in Twin Falls, Idaho. Russ, from our Boise branch shares with us pictures from the Grand Opening of Express Appliances new Twin Falls location.

Where did you grow up?
Crowley Lake, CA in the Eastern Sierras on the 395 corridor 3.5 hours south of Reno.  My wife Misty has grown up here, our 3 children were born in Meridian and we are blessed to call Idaho home.

How long in the trade?
My dad owned Bill's Mammoth Appliance for 30 + years ending in 1996 due to illness.  As a kid, I would occasionally ride along with my dad on service calls and grew up learning how to fix things. In 2007 I was hired on with a large local appliance repair shop in Boise.  I received factory training and worked long hours gaining a lot of experience.  In January 2010 I found myself laid off within the throws of the economic downturn.  The following month Misty and I decided to start our own business and have flourished in the face of adversity. February 2nd, 2010 Alltech Appliance was born. It's been a privilege to serve our community while  growing to a place where we are now providing gainful employment here in our beautiful Treasure Valley.

How long in your current company?
5 years

What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
Family time, camping, riding dirt bikes, taking our kids skiing, metal detecting, kid's baseball, traveling, mountain biking, and hiking in our splendorous state of Idaho.
Tech Danny in Blue and Tech Eric in Red

To what do you credit your success?
To the Almighty God who has always provided and we trust He will forever continue to guide our business and life decisions.  Great partners like W.L. May Company.  Employees and officers with integrity and a great work ethic.  The Treasure Valley which generously supports and appreciates small local businesses like ours.

What do you like about doing business with W.L. May?
Familiar faces, great service, employees' extensive knowledge, their desire to help any way they can, so many parts in stock and ready to go, oh and great luncheons!  We've enjoyed building relationships with the Branch Manager Regina and the other employees.  We feel they are a part of our team here at Alltech.

Can you share one piece of advice for others in our industry?
Happy customer's mean they'll come back. They'll also provide free advertising and referrals = best investment possible.

Can you share something with us that not many people would know?
We are small!  Misty and I operate Alltech Appliance from our 1180 sqft home allowing us to keep overhead low and pass that savings on to our customers.   My little brother Tommy Czeschin was a pro and olympic half pipe snowboarder, he is now coaching for the US Snowboarding team, and was a competitor on the Amazing Race in 2011 for season 19.

Where did you grow up?
Bakersfield, California

How long in the trade?
I started in 1985, in Klamath Falls. I got out of it from 1990-1995 to do maintenance work at the community college and then got back into it in 1995 in Medford.

How long in your current company?
Since 2001

What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
I try to get out and do things to get away from the stress of work. Fishing is my hobby. I have a friend on the Oregon Coast with a fishing boat and sometimes we will spend the night on the boat and head out early for the fishing. Its a lot of fun!

To what do you credit your success?
I have worked for several companies in the past and I tried to take lessons from those experiences. I found that sometimes the biggest thing is just to tell people when you will be there and actually show up. People are impressed by that. I try to treat people the way I would like to be treated-that seems to go a long way.

What do you like about doing business with W.L. May?
Rob, and the whole company at W.L. May, seem to go a bit further than other  companies. I keep using them as a result. Overnight shipping makes me look good to my customers. They also keep me up-to-date by letting me know about new products and accessories.

Can you share one piece of advice for others in our industry?
Be as honest as you can be. I think honesty goes a long way. People are skeptical and rely on us to know what works (and doesn't) and to honestly share that with them.

Can you share something with us that not many people would know?
I am not necessarily the most outgoing guy by nature, but I try to overcome that to provide my customers better and more comfortable service. Those skills have carried over and improved other aspects of my life.

Where did you grow up?
I was born in Sunnyvale and had the fortune of raising my family close to where I grew up in Cupertino.  Since I've been in Santa Clara County and the greater San Jose metropolitan area my whole life I've gotten to know the neighborhoods and established strong partnerships with other local appliance servicers, retailers and other home services companies.  It's amazing to see all of the orchards of years past transform into what's today Apple, Facebook, Google, and a ton of other tech companies.  Glad we bought our house in the 80s!

How long in the trade?
My dad started teaching me the trade in 1976 part-time and over the years became a full-time technician, sales associate, and, service manager, Today I service as President and Service Manager and I'm proud to work alongside my brother David (Owner, Parts Manager & VP), wife Cindy (Owner & Bookkeeper), and sons Chris (Marketing) and Nick (Office Administration), plus a dispatcher and five great technicians (and growing) keeping the family tradition alive.

How long in your current company?
My father, Bill, started the company in 1972 out of his garage.  Over the years we've grown to include a parts counter and a Maytag showroom but since contracted to focus on what we do best, in-home service.

The Boucher Family
What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
When am I not at work?  Those rare moments I get out of the office I spend time bowling with my brother, nephews, and friends.  Play poker with my wife, brother, his family, and other appliance servicers I know.  I volunteer with time with my church, cooking for their men's ministry and several of their annual events.  I watch hockey with my family and enjoy seeing my younger son, Nick, in plays while he pursues his theater education degree.

To what do you credit your success?
Having good people working for you.  Put in place a customer-centric team, that's knowledgeable, and I can trust to get the job done.  Whenever I make decisions I always ask: 1) Does it make the customer happy? 2) Will these actions retain or recruit new customers? 3) Is it profitable? 4) Will this grow the business?  If the answer is no to each of those questions I don't so it.  If the answer is no to one of those questions I think about the impacts it has on the whole of my business.

What do you like about doing business with WL May?
WL May has been a great partner for us.  Wes is near flawless in order processing, the Portland branch staff can answer any parts related questions we throw at them, and the Sacramento branch gets product to us next business day.  Their no-hassles return policy allows us to pre-screen parts and come as prepared as possible to help a customer in the first visit.

Can you share one piece of advice for others in our industry?
Don't let the 1% of your customers dictate 99% your business.  Rules are in place for a reason.  Make sure to help the customer when you can but sometimes the best thing you can do for a bad customer is offer them all or part of their money back and part ways.  We certainly work to reward the good customers with timely service, fair prices, professional dispatchers and service technicians, interesting and relevant web content, and other value added services like DIY replacement parts through our website, home services referrals, general maintenance programs (especially for corporate partners and laundrymats), billing terms for our property managers.  Our programs can be duplicated (and we've copied some of our business practices with permission from colleagues across the country) but our people and customer service are truly our own.

Is there anything else you like to say?
We became great friends with Maytag's second Old Lonely Repairman, Gordon Jump.  When we opened our Maytag retail center he made several guest appearances and signed autographs for our team and customers.  My office staff framed a picture of our team and we signed and presented it to him as a thank-you for all of his promotional appearances when we were getting off the ground.  Every time we bumped into Gordon at conferences and mixers he always took the time to visit and catch-up and stopped by our store when visiting his daughter at the local university.

Friday Featured Client: The People and Service Companies of Portland, Seattle, Boise, and Sacramento

Once a month we feature a client on this blog. It's way of saying thank you for allowing us the opportunity to help with a companies success, also it is a way of showing positive community involvement from the appliance service industry. We have found that there are a lot of unsung heroes in the appliance business, we want the world to know that. To be featured email me at rob.m@wlmay.com.

Today, instead of featuring a single company, we would like to feature a group of people: the people and appliance service companies of Portland, Seattle, Boise and Sacramento. While we ship parts all over the Western US, it is the people that come into our parts counters we would like to acknowledge today. W.L. May has been an part of the Portland community since its founding 1923. It is the support of our customers in Portland, and at all of our branches that has enabled us to grow and expand our network of stores from being a small Portland repair shop to becoming one of the largest appliance parts distributors in the Western United States.

Over the last year, we relocated a large part of our main warehouse to Vancouver, Washington. We also continued to enjoy having a well stocked inventory in house for our Portland counter. Like in any move, there were a few glitches that arose and were rapidly dealt with. Thanks to our customers for their understanding and cooperation as we got through those things. By moving our business offices, we are now putting the pieces in place to continue serving the people of the City Of Portland as well as the people of Seattle, Boise, and Sacramento for the next 90 years. Thanks to all of you for your support, you complete us.

Friday Featured Client: Pacific Home Appliance

Pacific Home Appliances
At W.L. May Company, we realize that without our clients we have nothing. In the spirit of celebrating that relationship, every month we feature one of the companies who allow us the privilege of helping address their parts needs. This month's profile was suggested by Terri in the Seattle branch. She reports:
In the Oso mudslide, Joe (Pacific Home Appliance) has donated 20 refrigerators, laundry sets, taken 4 truckloads of food, and more in assistance for this disaster.
To drive this stuff around to Darrington is over 2 hours one way due to the town being cut off by the slide.
Our hearts go out to the victims of the mudslide in Washington, and Pacific Home Appliances is doing the kind of community service that should make our industry proud.  The mudslide occurred on March 22 of this year. One month later, Joe is still making that drive several times a week to help in the clean up efforts-that is several hours a day on the road. That is in addition to running a full time service company and being a dad. Pretty impressive stuff. We'll let him tell you about himself and his company.

Kelly's Korner - Michael Moore

Hey, All,

I just want to share with all of you about the son of one of our customers and how this young man has taken his childhood experience of growing up in the appliance repair business into education, training and beyond.

Michael Moore is the son of Kelly Moore of Salem Appliance Repair and Antiques in Salem, Oregon.  He has grown up helping his dad clean and repair appliances since he was a child.  He helped his father start Salem Appliance Repair and runs the business on summer and winter breaks while his dad goes on a well deserved vacation.

Michael is now a senior mechanical engineering student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX and will be graduating in May.  His list of accomplishments is very high:

Member, chapter public relations officer then regional VP for the international honors society Phi Theta Kappa
Officer and webmaster of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
Founding president of the Tech Gun Club
Team member of HVAC group design project and the senior mechanical engineering design project
One of ten selected nationally for ASME Petroleum Division's Collegiate Council
Co-founder and operator of Salem Appliance Repair

And the list goes on and on.

Michael is actively looking for employment that will utilize his education, appliance knowledge and organizational skills.  He has applied to several companies, one of which is Whirlpool's WERLD Program. (Whirlpool Engineering Rotational Leadership Development Program).  Check out this program Whirlpool offers - this is where the next generation of appliances is coming from.  Having come from an appliance repair background, Michael is aware of what works and doesn't on appliances, and what it's like to actually repair them and not just design them.

It is always a pleasant - and sometimes interesting - time when Michael is home working at the shop.  He comes up with questions that I have never heard in my 13 years of working here.  He definately keeps me and his father (yeah, we're both Kelly's lol!) on our toes!

Michael - good luck on your career endeavors and I am pleased and proud to know and work with you!

Have a great week!

Where did you grow up?
Eastern Washington around Tri-Cities

How long in the trade?
12 Years

How long in your current company?
7 Years

What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
Hiking, going for walks, going to the beach, volunteering at our church, reading, getting together with family, and cheering on the Seahawks.

To what do you credit your success?
Many different things. Being connected to good vendors like W.L. May. and having a great rep like Kelly to help out. Having a great crew of good people to work with at Mr Appliance. We just strive to treat people right. Pretty basic, really, but it can be challenging sometimes.

What do you like about doing business with W.L. May?
Besides them being local and having a good inventory, we love how W.L. May's people go above and beyond the call of duty. Often they will do a little extra to solve problems or dig a little harder to get to those hard to find parts. Kelly's superhero book has been very helpful.

The team at Mr. Appliance are ready to help.
Can you share one piece of advice for others in our industry?
In general, you have to keep learning. There are a lot of fast changes happening in this industry and you really need to stay on top of them.

Is there anything else you like to say?
I guess that about covers it. Nothing else comes to mind at the moment.

This beautiful city offers year round recreational activities and festivities such as the annual Easter Day Art Festival and the St. George Marathon, held the first Saturday of October.

Reliable Maytag has been a family owned and operated business for the last 26 years. Wayne Hoppal has been in the appliance repair industry for an equally impressively long time. Fresh out of high school in 1982, Wayne was approached by Speed Queen to service local area commercial laundry mats. After 12 years of mastering appliance repair, in 1994, the opportunity to

purchase the local Maytag retailer presented itself. Thus marks the "birth" of Reliable Maytag. They successfully utilize the small local radio station to market their current and prospective clientele. Wayne is an admired fixture in the area due to his creative and distinctive radio spots. In their spare time, you can find Wayne and his wife Cindy out on the trails of the Paiute Trail System or boating on Lake Powell.

The biggest concern for Wayne is the amount of servicers being approached by manufacturers to become authorized techs in their small community. In his area, there are currently 4 authorized techs, and recently they learned 4 more are being added. In such a small city, this could prove costly. He considers his best tool is the internet and the instant access to information it provides. The introduction of cordless tools years back has made a great impact on repair times. The reduced time to repair appliances, allowed more service calls to be performed daily. Like in every aspect of repair life, having the right tool at the right time is key. Wayne feels that "W.L. May Co has all the right tools in place for servicers like me to be successful."

If you are ever cruising through Utah, enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the State (see link in the left column), stop by Reliable Maytag and introduce yourself; who knows, maybe Wayne will share his infamous radio commercials with you.

Friday Featured Client: Amco Appliance

Reprinted from: What's Cooking at W.L. May Co? Volume 1 Issue 9
You know you have built a successful service company when you're recognized on the streets of your community and are greeted by shouts of "For a Good, Job Rob". Rob Robbins was an employee of Amco Appliance when he and his wife Theresa purchased the business in 1973. For the last 39 years they have been servicing appliances from Anchorage to Peter's Creek, located at the foot of Chugach National Forest, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Rob and Theresa owe their substantial success to their internet presence. Over the last year, utilizing the internet, their business has actually tripled. While they realize the power of the internet, they believe it is actually a "double-edged sword". With the proliferation of do-it-yourself web pages, selling replacement parts as well, competition has become more prevalent. That is why they focus on providing superior service, which has built long term relationships with customers; consistently leading to repeat business, as well as referrals.

One of their concerns for the appliance service industry is the increased incidence of "disposable appliance" products. They believe manufacturers do not make appliances with the same quality as they once did. It used to be only the microwave was considered disposable. Now, with the decrease in quality, and the prohibitive replacement cost of electronic boards, they have found a decrease in actual repairs being performed.

When it's time for relaxation, Rob and Theresa can be found enjoying the scenic beauty of the Alaska territory. They enjoy many outdoor activities, whether it is fishing at Delong Lake, camping, or four-wheeling in Sutton, Alaska. One hobby Rob loves, seldom publicized in today's media, is his love of gold mining. He recently spent a week in Nome, AK watching the Discovery Channel film the "Bearing Sea Gold Rush", and sharpening his own skills. With gold prices as high as they are, it's a hobby that could actually pay for itself, and as we all know, that is quite rare.

Friday Featured Client: Bellflower/Lakewood Appliance

Reprinted from: What's Cooking at W.L. May Co? Volume 1 Issue 8
Bellflower/Lakewood Appliance in Bellflower, CA is the longest continuously operating appliance dealer in Bellflower, a suburb of Los Angeles. Established in 1931 as a Maytag Dealer when Bellflower was largely a community of dairy farmers, the store grew with the city as America took to the suburbs.

In 1980, Dan Koops, who was born and raised in Bellflower, took ownership of the store, which by now offered both new & used appliances, as well as parts and service for all brands. Dan credits his success to hard work and fair dealing. As Dan says, "When you have a store and you live in a town you have to back what you say will do. You really have nowhere to hide if you don't." Dan doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk. His reputation for hard work & dependability is such that he serves on the City Council, and he is the former mayor of Bellflower.

Of course, Dan struggles with the same kinds of issues that many companies deal with; finding good technicians is always a challenge. Competition from unlicensed amateur repairmen and questionable internet sites has also kept Dan on his toes. Dan says his relationship with W.L. May has helped. Dan commented "W.L. May offers better service from 1000 miles away than the competition that is less than 3 miles away. I don't need to worry about it. When I order my parts are here next day. Other suppliers have trouble meeting that need."

Between business and public service Dan keeps pretty busy. When he has time, he likes to go boating and also to work on his collection of vintage trucks. In fact, last year one of his trucks took 1st place in the working cars division during a big car show.

If you find yourself near the interchange of the 91 & 605 freeways in LA County, stop off in Bellflower and introduce yourself to Dan and see why Bellflower/Lakewood Appliance has been a fixture in the community since the 1930's

Friday Featured Client: Conklin's Appliance

Reprinted from: What's Cooking at W.L. May Co? Volume 1 Issue 7 Conklin Appliance first opened their doors 61 years ago, in 1951. Newman and Genie Conklin chose Lynnwood, WA to call "home". Lynnwood, "a mix of urban, suburban, small city, crossroads and bedroom community to many professionals who work in Seattle", is located in South Snohomish County.

When they first opened, the Conklin's operated from a small section of a corner building. Due to the success they enjoyed, they have since taken over the entire building. After 37 years of expansion, the Conklin's sold their business in 1988 to current owners Bob and Laverne Salstrom.

Conklin's believes they owe their success to their ability to provide personalized customer service. In addition to appliance service, they sell new product; including Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Maytag, Amana, Jenn -Air, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Asko, Wolf, and Bertazonni. They also sell Weber Barbeque grills, and are quite proud of their "earned reputation" as the State of Washington's largest retailer of the "Big Green Egg" barbeque.

Barb Conklin, daughter-in-law of Newman and Genie Conklin, still works in the sales and parts departments. In addition to her sales responsibilities, she processes warranty paperwork with Service Bench, and oversees the work of Third Party Administrators, whose extended warranty contracts they service. When not at work, she enjoys traveling and has fond memories of her recent cruise to New Orleans, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Belize. Another "hobby" she pursues is the raising and showing of Alpacas, who according to the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association, are a "cherished treasure of the ancient Incan civilization".

Barb enjoys working with W.L. May Co's Seattle Branch for many reasons; expressing various adjectives such as "accommodating", "efficient" and overall, feels they are just "easy to work with". If you ever find yourself going through Lynnwood, WA, stop by Conklin's and find out for yourself exactly what a "Big Green Egg" barbeque is.

Friday Featured Client: Home Appliance Service

Reprinted from: What's Cooking at W.L. May Co? Volume 1 Issue 5 Home Appliance Service, located in Boise, ID, is extremely proud of their heritage. Established in 1948 by John and Rosie White, they have continuously serviced the Treasure Valley for the past 64 years. The area was named for its "treasure chest of resources and opportunities".

In 1980, the business was sold to employees James and Marcia Forbus, who operated the business for 30 years
before selling to their son and daughter-in-law, Don and Dawna in January 2010. To say it's a "family run business" would be an obvious understatement. Operating with 4 service technicians and 2 in-shop employees, they service most major brands including, but not limited to: Whirlpool, Maytag, Electrolux, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG,and Haier. They are also one of only a few that service and perform warranty work for In-Sink-Erator and Waste King Disposals and hot water dispensers.

Home Appliance Service prides themselves on the quality of their workmanship, and take great strides to prevent call backs; they are aware not only does it cost valuable time, but it is a disappointment to their customers, the very ones they strive to please on every service call. Dawna believes they keep unnecessary call backs to a minimum because of their partnership with W.L. May Co, who she says provide "quick, accurate, and dependable service".

When not working tirelessly, the Forbus family enjoys
spending time at their cabin in Garden Valley, located north of Boise along the Middlefork of the Payette River. The area offers great mountain scenery, hot springs and is inhabited by a variety of wildlife. Similar to many Northwest families, they enjoy the great outdoors; with fishing, hunting, and camping at the top of their list.

If you ever find yourself traveling through the beautiful Boise community, stop by Home Appliance Service and introduce yourself to the Forbus family. See for yourself what makes them one of Boise's most successful and acclaimed appliance repair service companies.
