I don't know how many of you have multiple people loading the dishwasher at your house, but I have several.  And we all load it differently.  My #1 son gets miffed with me most times because he thinks I load it wrong and he'll completely redo it - heavy sigh!  I just try to get the maximum amount of dishes in and make sure that the spray will hit all of the surface areas, right?  I don't prewash my dishes but do scrap as much leftovers off as possible.  In the case of rice, I will make sure that all the rice is off the dishes.  My dishwasher doesn't do well with rice.


The #2 son puts the minimum of dishes in he can get spread out so it "looks" full.

The #1 son's girlfriend almost completely washes the dishes before putting them in.

The #3 son just unloads.

And of course the grand-dog is more than happy to help with any "pre-washing" lol!

Wednesday Weekly Stock: Dishwasher Items

Every week at W.L. May we have several items we feature as good parts to consider adding to your stock. These parts also have special pricing available. For pricing details, ask your account representative for more information. This week we look at a variety of dishwasher items.

Starting with Halloween, and then Thanksgiving, and then Christmas, the season of  Fall leading into winter is also a busy social holiday season. This time of year, lots of folks throw house parties. They might be scaring each other in funny costumes, sharing memories over a turkey dinner feast, or ripping open packages under a decorated tree. It doesn't really matter, there will be food. That means there will be dirty dishes. This is not the time of year to have an out of order dishwasher.

Servicers know to expect calls for ranges during the holiday season, but it easy to forget the number of dishwasher calls generated at this time of year. For many consumers, a broken dishwasher is problem that they let wait too long. By the time the servicer gets the call, time is of the essence. For this reason, we advocate servicers check their stock now so they can be ready to achieve first call completions when that last minute phone call comes.

Several of the items featured this week were also featured back in August on this blog. They are still good items to have on hand. The SSDW7 is your 7 foot universal drain hose, W10685193 is the Whirlpool dishwasher installation elbow, and the 60423LAL is the disposal hookup with the rubber tubing and 4 screw clamps.

Also in that same August post we talked about a common Whirlpool dishwasher door latch. We offered the white version of this assembly, part W10130694. This week we are featuring the same assembly with the black handle, part W10130695. August also saw us feature a 72" straight pigtail (or power cord) for dishwashers. Sometimes you need an angled plug. For that situation, this week we feature 60663, it has the angled pug you need on a 6 foot long cord.

This next part is no stranger to this blog either. Kelly has written about it and it has been a featured part in the past. That does not mean we will not mention it again today. Once again, this week the DWP24 makes an appearance. This is such an affordable bit of insurance against hidden dishwasher leaks, that we think every home with an automatic dishwasher should be equipped with one.

Finally this week, we have a grab bag filled with a few other goodies for dishwasher servicing. For example, to  keep you dishwasher clean we have Dishwasher Magic, the liquid cleaner for the interior of your dishwasher, part 12012. For installation jobs, the 60421 air gap can be helpful in preventing backflow. For a safe installation, the 41045 6' stainless steel wrapped hose gives great prtoection against burst hoses. With two kinds of fittings it is a one stop solution for many dishwasher fill hoses.

Kelly's Korner - Dishwasher Dilema Part Deux

Last week I wrote about the issues I was having with my dishwasher.  Water was not coming into the tub and my dishes were not getting clean.

So I talked to one of my favorite techs, Patrick, and watched a couple of troubleshooting videos on it and pulled up my big girl panties to go home and see what I could find.

When I got home I opened the dishwasher - yup, still dirty dishes! - and took the bottom rack out and set it on the floor.  Then I gently grasped the float (that's the white round dome thing in the corner of your dishwasher floor) and carefully raised and lowered it listening for a click.  The float works kinda like the float in your toilet tank - once there is enough water to float the float, a switch below clicks off to shut off the water flow into the tub.  I heard it click!  Yahoo!  If it didn't click then I had Patrick on speed dial.


So then I closed the door and turned it on for about half a minute - it was running....  So I opened the door and looked to the side and bottom of the tub to see if there was water coming into the tub - THERE WAS!!!!

OK, so now I'm totally confused, right?  There hadn't been any water coming into it before and now there is?  What's up with this?  So I put the bottom rack back in, put in detergent, closed the door and let it run.  Guess what?  I had clean dishes!

On one hand, I'm glad that Patrick didn't have to come over and do a more thorough diagnosis and that I wasn't going to have to pay for a repair.  On the other, I was totally frustrated that after all the worry and whatever, the darned thing was working again!  I told Patrick I think I scared it into working again by threatening it that he was going to come over and tear is apart if it didn't behave.  He thinks I may have had a stuck float switch and me fiddling with it got it working again.  Have you ever had something go wonky and when you get it to the repair person, it runs fine?  ARGH!

So now I have clean dishes and no repair bills, but I think I need to make Patrick some cookies for being there for me.

Wednesday Weekly Stock: Dishwasher Parts

Often we get call from do-it-yourselfers who want to replace their dishwasher rack. These folks are often surprised at the cost of dishwasher racks. Sometimes they even think that the cost of a new rack is enough to drive them to replacement the dishwasher.

Wear and tear on the rack that can lead to spots where the racks coating wears away. that is not usually enough to condemn the rack to the scrap heap. Dishwasher racks can be spot painted with touch up paints designed specifically for the conditions inside of an operating dishwasher. This week we feature both the blue, #675576, & white, #676453, touch up paints.

Not a featured item this week, but another useful repair piece that often goes with rack touch up paint are tips that slip over tines on the rack. Naturally these are called tine tips and are sold in packages of 125. These are available in white #675679, blue #12022, or grey #676458.

Modern Whirlpool dishwashers generally have a control board in stead of a timer. That board frequently is designed to have a thermal fuse to protect it from overheating. The nice thing about this arrangement is that if the fuse blows, it can be replaced without servicing the whole board. For that thermal fuse your part number is 675813.

Kelly's Korner - Dishwasher Dilemas

Well, this seems to be the week for dishwasher dilemas.  Mine decided not to wash the dishes that are loaded in there!  Argh!  And a co-worker is moving into a new place and his isn't working either.

I have never worked on a dishwasher and may be calling a couple of my favorite techs for help, but I think that it may be the water valve.  I am not getting water into the machine - but it could be something else.  When you are having an issue with one of your appliances there could be a couple of different reasons it's not doing what it is supposed to.  That's why calling a qualified appliance technician is vital to getting your machine repaired correctly and with a minimum of time, trouble and expense.  If you are trying to do the repair yourself, you can by-guess and by-golly all the parts you want, but if that doesn't fix the problem, most parts places won't take them back if they've been installed.  Call a tech!

W L May is also running a weekly special on some common dishwasher parts this week - the always popular Dwip Pan , rack maintenance vinyl paint (for those spots on your racks that have chipped away and are showing the wire), hoses, and a few other things.  Don't forget to pick up some dishwasher cleaner, too.  W L May sells several different cleansers for the dishwasher - these help clean mineral deposits and get rid of smells from food particles that may be not completely washed out of the pump and hoses.  Don't forget to clean the door, too, especially around the gasket area.  Make sure the gasket is in good shape and replace if needed or you might have some unwanted leakage.

Wednesday Weekly Stock: Dishwasher

We have looked at dishwasher parts before as many of you may remember. this week we revisited several popular items from prior promotions. We also have a few new items that we have not looked at before in our Wednesday Weekly Stock series.

The first of these new items we are featuring this week is a part that we often get requests for along the lines of " I need that hose connector with the clamps for hooking up a dishwasher". Sure, we understand you mean a dishwasher drain connector. What we have here is a piece of rubber tubing the tapers down and connects the dishwasher drain to the disposal. The hose is secured by the 4 worm clamps that come included with the part. The Ez-Flo/Laloo part number for this piece is 60423LAL.

A dishwasher install also requires power. Generally the power cord is supplied with a new dishwasher, however if you ever need to replace one, they can be a little tricky to find, This 6 ft. cord from Ez-Flo/Laloo should do the trick for you. As your parts rep for number 60655LAL.

Another part we get calls for regularly is the thermal fuse that attaches to the control board. There are some that resemble a dryer thermostat. There are also many machines that use the style of thermal fuse we are featuring this week. More of a modular unit, it is used on many Whirlpool dishwashers and has the part number 8193762.

A part we feature frequently is the DWK-6572DW dishwasher installation kit. That's because we feel that kit offers real value. The kit comes with 2 different styles of water line fittings. Hose style and 1/4 line style. 7 Foot long stainless steel inlet line. It also includes Teflon tape, wiring, wire nuts hose clamps, and an electrical clamp for securing unit to power supply. Best of all, the kit costs less than buying the components individually.

Another hookup item that might be needed if you are installing a Whirlpool dishwasher is their 90 degree elbow. Whirlpool's fitting has unusual sizing of 3/4" hose fitting on one size and 3/8" compression fitting on the other side. Keep one in stock "just in case". Part number W10685193.

As mentioned, these items have been featured before. This week we featured a few parts to help with water coming into and out of the dishwasher. Getting water into the dishwasher is accomplished on many unit by the use of a single coil water valve, like the "universal" DW-53. A "universal" option for getting water out of the machine is the 7 foot dishwasher drain hose, part SSDW-7.

 To close this weeks stock, we feature an item that has been known to cause some confusion on the research front. Here is the confusion: the latch can be purchased with or without the handle attached. The parts breakdown however does not make that clear. If you order the latch as shown on the breakdown, that is all you will get: the latch. HOWEVER, if you look up the handle, the parts breakdown won't indicate it, but you will get the handle and a latch as an assembly. 

This tip is not true for all dishwasher models, but a great many Whirlpool units use this assembly. Our featured item this week is the white version of the handle and latch assembly, part W10130694.

Kelly's Korner - Dwip, Dwip, Dwip

Hey, All,

There is nothing more annoying and frustrating than a leaky faucet, right?  Drip, drip, drip, day and night until you just can't stand it anymore and call a plumber.  But what if you have a drip under your dishwasher or washing machine?  You may be able to hear it, but not figure out where it's coming from.  Or you may not hear it...disaster awaits!

You all have seen the way water can shape rocks and earth with the relentless power of rain, rivers and floods.  But a drip, time after time, can be just as destructive to your house.  Think about it - these drips from a cracked hose or pump, is seeping into your flooring, sub floor and joists and soaking up that water and setting up for rot.  Not a good image, huh?  The cost of having to replace all that (and with today's expensive flooring options) is enough to turn your hair white.

So what to do?  Well, as usual, we at W L May have a solution!  Come on in and get aquainted with the Dwip Pan - no, I'm not being silly this time!  That's what it's called.  The DWP24 is 24" x 20 1/2" x 3/4" with a lip on 3 sides.  This will catch the drips and directs the water to the front of the machine where it will immediately become apparent that you have an issue.  And at an inexpensive $39.95 retail cost, it is very cheap insurance against a potentially monstrous repair bill.  And this is made right here in Oregon!

Now for your washing machine, we also carry a washer drip pan.  The 20752 is a high impact plastic and is also a very inexpensive solution at $43.92 retail.  This pan measures 32" x 30" x 2" outside dimensions and has an optional 1" drain either out the bottom or the side.  Your washing machine fits comfortably inside no matter what style of washer you have, top load or front load.

So for a minimal cost you can save thousands on potential repair bills from undetected water leaks!  You might even check with your homeowners or renter's insurance companies and see if using these qualifies you for a discount.

Better to be safe than sorry!  And all you techs out there - I'd be pushing these at every service call!

Wednesday Weekly Stock: Dishwashers

Dishwashers are great for washing dishes. It says so right in the name of the appliance. There is a bit of problem. To keep your dishwasher running well it requires a little maintenance on occasion. The machine will clean the dishes, but what will clean the machine? Luckily we do have some cleaners feature this week.

In the past we have mentioned a few cleaners from Summit Products. Glisten offers a powdered citric acid based formula, while Dishwasher Magic is a fluid product. Both will help remove hard water. Glisten can be used while washing a load of dishes. Dishwasher Magic also works as a rust stain remover and is recommended to use in an empty dishwasher.

Finally Whirlpool offers Affresh tablets specifically engineered for dishwashers. We have looked at this product before as well.

Of course, without water the dishwasher is useless. One of the most popular styles of dishwasher water valve is the Horton 514 valve. Supco has their own version, DW-53.

Almost as important as getting water into the machine, is keeping the water in the machine. That is where door gaskets enter the picture. On some machines there is only one gasket that goes up and around the door area. On many Frigidaire style appliances sold under the Frigidaire, Kenmore, Gibson, Tappan, and Westinghouse name, the grey gasket 154827601 is used. It goes up and around the door frame, sort of like an upside down U. In addition to door gasket is also called a tub gasket.

In addition to the seal that goes up and around the door, Frigidaire used a gasket that attached as a strip along the bottom of the door. A popular size that we stock (and you might want to stock as well) is 154576501. I have seen this part called a bottom door seal, a tank gasket, or a shield.

Whirlpool has their own flavor of door gasket. While most times a white gasket is used, sometimes it a black one such as we are featuring this week, part W10509257.

Even though most dishwashers are of a standard size, these are just a few of the gaskets used. Differences in length and mounting style make it important you get the gasket that fits the machine you are servicing. We can determine that for you if you provide us with the model and serial number of the machine being serviced.

If worst comes to worst, sometimes the only right answer is replacement. If you are faced with that situation, you can make installing the replacement dishwasher easier withe the use of a USD dishwasher installation kit. We have mentioned this kit before, but it is such a useful product it bears repeating.

Wednesday Weekly Stock: Dishwashers

In a previous post, we told you about Glisten & Dishwasher Magic. This week we are also featuring Whirlpool's solution to dishwasher cleaning. Affresh as a brand started as a cleaning product for front load washers. Due to it's success the product line expanded to include a product for cleaning dishwashers. Like original Affresh, the dishwasher cleaner uses a puck that is put into the machine while a normal cycle is run. The part number for a three pack of those pucks is W10282479.

In addition to cleaning the dishwasher, parts to install the dishwasher are also regularly requested here at W.L. May Company. USD makes a universal installation kit that includes a straight pigtail, fill hose, elbow fitting, and other install supplies. It's part is DWK-6572DW.  This same kit can be gotten with a elbowed pigtail as part DWK-6572SSDW.

In our last dishwasher stock post we told you about the 5 ft. stainless steel dishwasher hose from EZ-Flo (Laloo). This hose is also available in a 6 ft length under part number 41045.

Dishwasher hoses usually come with an elbow fitting. In the case of Whirlpool, these size of the fitting is a little unusual. Most dishwashers use a 3/8 x 3/8 elbow, Whirlpool uses one that is 3/8 X 3/4. For this specialized elbow, use Whirlpool's number W10685193.

Lastly we close out this week with a part that is not hard to find, but occasioanlly seems to be hard to request. This is the thermal fuse link used on the control board for Whirlpool dishwashers. You may know of it under its prior part numbers, 3376359 or 3375557. Today the part is sold under part number 675813 and we have it on hand to satisfy your stocking needs.

Weekly Wednesday Stock Ideas

This week we are looking at dishwashers installation materials and cleaning accessories.Like any appliance that uses water, hoses are a necessity for a dishwasher install.

A great choice for hooking up the fill line to a dishwasher is a fill hose with a stainless steel mesh wrapping to prevent against burst hoses. This hose for EZ flow is a 60 inch (5 foot) length. Other lengths are available. Ask you account manager for details.

In some installations, an air gap such as 60421 is used to prevent back flow siphoning.

On some dishwashers a connector elbow might be a requirement. The 34FHT is the EZ-Flo solution to this install need.

A dishwasher install not only requires hoses for filling the appliance, but a drain hose is needed too. The SSDW7 is a seven foot "universal" style drain hose.

With all of the hoses and connections that may b e involved in a dishwasher installation, it is not a bad "insurance policy" to include a drip pan under the appliance. The DWP24, also known a "Dwip Pan"is a popular solution. Simply place under the dishwasher and leaks will be contained, helping to preserve kitchen flooring. Several dealers tell us that they will not even do an install without including one of these.

After the dishwasher is installed, good maintenance requires occasional cleanings, more so if you are in an area with hard water. The long standing cleaning solution has traditionally been Glisten Powder. Glisten is a citric acid based, food safe cleaner. Simply add the powder to your detergent while washing a load of dishes. We stock both the 2 oz packet, part 19212 and the 4 oz two-pack, part 19045.

A new product has been rising in popularity and has been challenging Glisten's throne as dishwasher cleaner of choice. Dishwasher Magic, part 12012. Unlike Glisten, Dishwasher Magic is liquid. Dishwasher Magic is meant to be run through a dishwasher cycle without dishes. The big appeal here is that while Glisten is a cleaner and rust remover, Dishwasher Magic is a disinfectant and kills germs for both E Coli and Salmonella.

The last dishwasher part we are mentioning today is not an installation item. However, it is a little bit of a tricky to research.  We get calls asking about this part regularly. The part is a latch assembly that comes with a black handle. What is tricky about it, is that on an illustrated parts breakdown they do not show that the handle comes with the latch. Also many breakdowns do list a latch that is minus the handle, which complicate matters further. Then to really confuse us, some models that use this part the listing for the assembly will be found under the listing for the handle NOT the latch. Clear as mud, we know. Five Seasonal Items

Here we are, almost half way through November. The annual onslaught of kitchen related appliances is underway as people prepare for their various holiday celebrations. We here at W.L. May have been busy, not only with helping find those obscure range parts, but in a few other ways as well. We have some upcoming activities and some products worth mentioning. Here are five things:

1. This year, W.L. May is holding a Toy Drive to provide toys to sick kids who will be hospitalized at Christmas-time. All of our branches are accepting donations of new, unwrapped and unused toys. The hospitals involved have asked donors to avoid toys with violent or religious themes, We thank you in advance for helping out.
2. Cadet, the makers of high quality electric heaters and a Northwest-based company has joined forces with W.L. May to help address your winter heating needs. As an authorized distributor, we now have access to their entire product line and look forward to serving you.
3. We have a few new dishwasher installation kits on hand that are proving to be popular. The basic kit (Part#  DWK-6572SSDW) includes 1 6ft SS Dishwasher hose with 3/8" standard elbow, 6 ft straight power cord, 3/4"  "Whirlpool Elbow", an 1.5" hose clamp, 3 yellow wire nuts, a roll of Teflon tape and a Romex connector. The same kit is alternately available with  a 6 ft 90 degree power cord (Part# DWK-6572DW).
4. During the late fall and early winter, we make a point of deepening our stock of kitchen appliance parts. There are also range part specials we are running through the end of the year, your account manager can share details. Getting around during the winter can be challenging, so we offer drop shipping to your customers on your behalf. If we are for some reason out of stock, parts can also be special ordered from the factory and drop shipped to your service company on a next day or second day basis. Again, ask your account manager for details and shipping options. 
5. United Servicers Association is now taking registration for their main meeting, the ASTI (Appliance Service Technical Institute) that will be held in New Orleans, LA from February 9-12th, 2015. As always, this will be a great opportunity to improve your repair skills as well as your business skills. It is also a good way to see new products and share service experiences with repair companies from all across North America.
